Writing
In December 2022, Genndy Tartakovsky emphasized his desire for ‘Fixed’ to avoid relying on pop-culture jokes. Instead, he aimed to create a film centered around character-focused humor, believing this approach would help ‘Fixed’ stand out among other R-rated animated films. Tartakovsky’s vision was to craft a narrative that prioritizes genuine emotional connections and character development over fleeting references.
By June 2023, Tartakovsky revealed that the “camaraderie” among the characters would draw inspiration from the ensemble dynamics found in Judd Apatow films, such as ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ (2005) and ‘Knocked Up’ (2007). This influence suggests that ‘Fixed’ will not only provide laughs but also explore meaningful relationships and interactions among its cast, enhancing the film’s overall depth.
With this focus on character-driven storytelling, Tartakovsky aims to create a unique animated experience that resonates with adult audiences. As anticipation builds for the film’s release, fans are eager to see how these elements come together to deliver a fresh and engaging narrative that sets ‘Fixed’ apart in the landscape of adult animation.
Animation and design
The animation for ‘Fixed’ was produced by Renegade Animation, with Scott Wills serving as the art director. Wills has previously collaborated with Genndy Tartakovsky on projects like ‘Samurai Jack’ and ‘Primal’. Production for the film began in July 2022 and was completed in September 2023. Initially, Tartakovsky intended for the film to be hand-drawn; however, he later considered computer animation to better market the project. Ultimately, he decided to stick with hand-drawn animation, making ‘Fixed’ the first hand-drawn film produced by Sony Pictures Animation. This choice aligned with the film’s narrative style, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
Tartakovsky aimed for the animation to evoke the classic charm of Disney’s ‘Lady and the Tramp’ (1955), while also drawing inspiration from the works of legendary animators Tex Avery and Chuck Jones. Their influence is particularly evident in the film’s emphasis on expressive animation, which enhances the comedic and emotional moments throughout the story. This combination of classic styles and modern storytelling techniques positions ‘Fixed’ as a unique entry in the realm of animated films, promising a visually captivating experience that resonates with both humor and heart.
