Pre-production
## Captain America: Brave New World – A New Chapter Takes Flight
“Captain America: Brave New World” wasn’t envisioned as a simple extension of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” Anthony Mackie, reprising his role as Sam Wilson, emphasized a fresh story with new characters.
Following a director search, Julius Onah was chosen in July 2022. The film’s title, initially revealed as “Captain America: New World Order” at the San Diego Comic Con that same year, sparked discussions due to the subtitle’s association with various political and social movements. Originally slated for May 2024 as part of Phase Five of the MCU, the release date eventually shifted.
The D23 Expo in September 2022 unveiled additional cast members. Danny Ramirez and Carl Lumbly would return as Joaquin Torres and Isaiah Bradley, respectively. Tim Blake Nelson’s return as Samuel Sterns/Leader from “The Incredible Hulk” (2008) was confirmed, alongside Shira Haas’ casting as Sabra, a character from the comics. Director Onah described the film as a suspenseful thriller with filming commencing in early 2023.
News broke in October 2022 that Harrison Ford would portray Thaddeus Ross, replacing the late William Hurt who previously held the role. This casting choice included Ford’s involvement in another upcoming MCU film, “Thunderbolts” (2025). Production gears shifted into high gear with pre-production work kicking off at Trilith Studios in Atlanta by November 2022, ahead of the March 2023 filming start.
The creative team included costume designer Gersha Phillips and production designer Ramsey Avery, known for his work on previous MCU films. Xosha Roquemore joined the cast in January 2023 in an undisclosed role, with Mackie gearing up to begin filming that March.

Cameras rolled on “Captain America: Brave New World” on March 21, 2023, at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. The film, initially cloaked under the working title “Rochelle Rochelle,” aimed for a grounded and realistic feel in its action sequences, showcasing a different side of Sam Wilson’s abilities. Director Julius Onah emphasized this focus on a more tangible portrayal of Captain America.
Kramer Morgenthau took the reins as cinematographer, and production designer Ramsey Avery echoed Onah’s vision, aiming for a more realistic aesthetic compared to recent MCU entries. By late March, Liv Tyler joined the cast, reprising her role as Betty Ross from “The Incredible Hulk.” There were also talks of Julia Louis-Dreyfus returning as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike didn’t significantly impact filming. Marvel Studios planned to maximize principal photography and address any scripting needs during scheduled reshoots. In May 2023, set photos revealed the surprise addition of Seth Rollins to the cast.
A pivotal moment arrived in early June. The film’s title underwent a revision, transforming from “Captain America: New World Order” to the more optimistic “Captain America: Brave New World.” /Film’s Jeremy Mathai applauded the change, highlighting its hopeful message for both Sam Wilson’s future and the evolution of representation in the MCU. Collider’s Hilary Remley also endorsed the decision, acknowledging the potential for negative interpretations of the original title.
