In light of an alleged drug use incident at a pub in Pune on Sunday, the city’s BJP unit has called on the state government to immediately relocate all such establishments outside the city. They also announced a campaign against illegal pubs within the city.
“The state government should promptly move all pubs out of the city. The administration should publicly disclose the list of pubs along with the regulations governing them,” stated city BJP chief Dheeraj Ghate.
Ghate mentioned that BJP workers are prepared to take independent action against illegal pubs operating in the city. “Speakers in pubs should be turned off after 10 PM, similar to the restrictions during the Ganesh festival. Complaints from local residents regarding pubs should be taken seriously, and an independent cell of women police officers should be deployed at night for the safety of women,” Ghate said. He added that action should also be taken against over speeding vehicles and those creating noise disturbances at night. Additionally, Ghate noted that the BJP plans to expose those involved in selling banned gutkha in the city soon.
Acting swiftly after being appointed as the Union Minister, first-time MP Murlidhar Mohol announced on Monday that following his directives, the city police suspended two officers from Shivajinagar police station for negligence in duty. This action came after a video surfaced showing narcotics consumption at a local pub.
“Following my instructions, the city police have taken strict action by suspending the Police Inspector and Assistant Police Inspector of Shivajinagar,” said Mohol. He added that the city police must launch a major drive with dedicated and independent teams to curb narcotics use.
“The anti-narcotics drive must be initiated immediately across all colleges, pubs, hotels, and other suspicious locations. Additionally, we need to trace and eliminate the sources supplying narcotics to the city,” said Mohol.
On Monday, the city unit of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) staged a protest in response to the recent incident involving alleged narcotics consumption at a local pub. Demonstrators from MNS expressed their anger and demanded immediate and stringent action against the illegal activities occurring in such establishments. The protest was a clear indication of the public outrage and the growing concern over the rise in drug-related incidents within the city.
Adding to the turmoil, members of the Patit Pavan Sanghatana resorted to violence by pelting stones at the pub in question. This aggressive reaction underscores the frustration and exasperation among citizens and various groups over the perceived laxity in enforcement and monitoring of illegal activities by the authorities. The incident at the pub has evidently struck a chord, highlighting deeper issues of governance and law enforcement in the city.
In response to the growing unrest, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) (Socialist Party) has announced plans to hold a protest on Tuesday. This protest aims to address two critical issues: the rampant use of narcotics and the escalating crime rates in the city. The NCP (SP) leadership has emphasized the need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to tackle these problems, urging the state government and law enforcement agencies to take swift and effective measures.
The NCP (SP)’s protest seeks to shine a light on the broader implications of drug abuse, including its impact on public safety, health, and social stability. They argue that the rise in drug-related crimes is not just a law enforcement issue but a societal problem that requires a multifaceted strategy. This includes better education and awareness programs, more robust support for addiction treatment and rehabilitation, and stricter regulations and monitoring of establishments where such activities are likely to occur.
The incident has sparked a wider debate on the effectiveness of current policies and the need for more proactive measures. Many citizens and community leaders are calling for increased accountability and transparency from the authorities. They demand that the administration not only crack down on illegal activities but also address the root causes of drug abuse and crime.
As the situation unfolds, it is evident that the city’s residents are no longer willing to tolerate the status quo. The protests by MNS, the violent actions of Patit Pavan Sanghatana, and the planned demonstration by the NCP (SP) all signal a collective call for change. There is a growing consensus that a more aggressive and sustained effort is needed to combat the dual threats of narcotics and crime, ensuring a safer and healthier environment for all residents.
